Today, Parliament passed a motion to commemorate 200 years of the Singapore Police Force. It was to honour the contributions of the SPF in making Singapore one of the safest places in the world.
69 past and current members of the SPF family were present for the occasion. I had the pleasure of chatting with 30 retired officers (the group had to be split up because of SMM). Some had operated in a very different law and order landscape, where drugs, gangs and guns were rampant problems that had to be tackled urgently.
Things in Singapore are thankfully very different today. The SPF has played a key role in making that happen. It celebrates its bicentennial as a world-class agency capable of dealing with complex threats beyond just traditional crime. Trust between the police and public is high. Despite frequent criticism with the rise of social media, our officers are undeterred and consistently perform their duties without fear or favour.
To all police officers past and present, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your selfless duty. You are the reason we all enjoy peace and security, and we will never take this for granted. – LHL
